As the colder months settle in, leisure centres across Oxfordshire operated by Better are opening their doors as designated ‘Warm Spaces’, offering sanctuary to residents seeking relief from winter’s chill. Now in its third year, the initiative was launched in response to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis and aims to provide comfort and community support to those in need.
What’s on Offer?
The Warm Spaces initiative offers visitors a place to stay warm, enjoy comfortable seating, charge devices, access free WiFi, and even take a hot shower. Many centres are also providing additional activities tailored to their local communities:
Chipping Norton Leisure Centre
- Free seated exercise classes organised by the Move Together team at West Oxfordshire District Council.
- Complimentary hot drinks, along with funded soft play and Toddler Splash sessions.
Carterton and White Horse Leisure Centres
- Funded junior memberships for 11–16-year-olds through the HAF (Holiday Activities and Food) scheme for children eligible for free school meals.
- Warm café spaces for young visitors.
Windrush Leisure Centre
- Discounted access to Toddler World for YouMove families, funded by West Oxfordshire District Council, available until 18th December.
Wantage Leisure Centre

- 200 free swim passes for YouMove families during the Christmas holidays, funded by South & Vale District Council.
Supporting the Community
Kate Mulrey, Community Sports Manager for GLL, explained the motivation behind the initiative:
“Operating facilities at the heart of our local community, we are aware that some people may struggle to heat their homes in winter. As a charitable social enterprise, we want to help local residents, so our staff will be on hand to welcome those in need to our warm spaces during the coming months.”
