Oxfordshire Guardian in a previous life

The Oxfordshire Guardian is back; local, independent, and led by the original team who know Oxfordshire best.

First launched in 2011, the Oxfordshire Guardian was a familiar sight across the county, with free weekly newspapers delivered in Oxford, Witney, Abingdon, Didcot, Wallingford, and Wantage. After publishing thousands of local stories and becoming a trusted voice for communities large and small, the paper closed in 2018, leaving behind a noticeable gap in truly local trusted journalism.

We’re proud to bring the Oxfordshire Guardian back to life as a fully independent digital news platform, created by the same team of local journalists who ran the paper the first time around.

We’re not part of a corporate chain. We don’t run clickbait, paywalled content, or sponsored press releases disguised as news. Instead, we focus on what matters to real people in Oxfordshire:

  • Local news with real context and clarity
  • Community stories and events that don’t get covered elsewhere
  • Honest reporting on local councils, schools, planning decisions, and more
  • Sport, culture, and grassroots voices from across the county

We’re digital-first, so we can publish news as it happens, not just once a week. But we still hold ourselves to traditional journalistic standards: accuracy, fairness, and a clear focus on serving the public.

We also believe local journalism should be for the people, not advertisers or algorithms. That’s why we don’t run intrusive popups or sell your data. We fund this platform through reader support, not click revenue.

Thank you for reading, sharing, and supporting local journalism.
