Yellow Submarine, an award-winning and much-loved Oxfordshire charity, is celebrating a major milestone with the opening of its brand-new Life-Changing Bakery, a dedicated space designed to deliver vital work experience and life skills to adults with learning disabilities.

The charity, which already operates two popular cafés in Oxford and Witney, serves over 70,000 customers a year, with 100% of profits reinvested into programmes that empower its members. By expanding into this purpose-built bakery, Yellow Submarine will be able to fulfil more orders, support more trainees, and increase the reach of its unique range of Life-Changing Bakes, available online and in select local outlets.

Two of these bakes recently won Great Taste Awards 2025, with one judge praising their Double Cheese Biscuits as “beautifully buttery with deep notes of cheese”, a testament to the quality and dedication of the charity’s trainees.

More Than Just Baking

Since its launch in 2009, Yellow Submarine has built a reputation for creating opportunities for people with learning disabilities to live life to the full. The new bakery will expand its tailored hands-on training programmes, where trainees learn skills ranging from baking and packaging to customer service and stock management, all in a supportive environment designed to build confidence and employability.

This expansion follows years of planning, with the bakery project first initiated in 2019. Its creation has been supported by a combination of fundraising efforts, community backing, and local partnerships — all aimed at delivering a long-term, sustainable impact.

A Star-Studded Launch

The opening event will feature acclaimed television presenter and Bake Off judge Prue Leith, who will officially cut the ribbon.

Yellow Submarine said:

“We are so delighted to have finally reached this stage, to be opening our new bakery really is a dream come true. The project has been running since 2019, and has already enabled us to teach new skills to so many of our trainees, as well as increase our customer base. The support for the new bakery has been overwhelming and we’re so excited to have Prue join us to officially cut the ribbon!”

A Ripple Effect for the Community

Beyond creating award-winning bakes, the new facility is expected to deliver wider community benefits — from creating local jobs and expanding volunteering opportunities, to increasing support for local suppliers and fostering partnerships with other Oxfordshire food businesses.

Every purchase of a Yellow Submarine bake directly funds training, employment support, and social activities for adults with learning disabilities.
