If you think running events are just for super-athletes or club regulars, let me introduce you to parkrun in Oxfordshire, a free, friendly, and surprisingly fun way to move more and meet people while you exercise.

Every Saturday morning, people of all ages and abilities gather in parks and open spaces to jog, walk or run 5km. No medals, no pressure, just a community-led movement that’s grown into one of the UK’s most popular ways to get active.

And on Sundays mornings, many of those same people are back with their children for Junior Parkrun for kids 4-14 to run the shorter 2km version.

Parkrun say they are over registered parkrunners worldwide, will you join them?

Why Try Parkrun?

  • It’s completely free and you can attend ad-hoc at any location in the UK
  • You’ll be part of a supportive local community of all abilities
  • No pressure to run the whole thing, walk when you need
  • Everyone is welcome: beginners, walkers, buggies (although please respect the fast runners, see important tips below)

All you need to do is register once online, print a barcode, and turn up.

“I started walking them at first. It felt good just getting out. Now I run and volunteer when I can. It’s genuinely changed my weekends.” — Matt, Oxford

Five first-time parkrun tips: arrive early, wear comfortable clothing, start steadily, allow overtaking and walk when needed
First-time parkrun tips: attend the briefing, dress comfortably, start steadily, allow space for overtaking and enjoy taking part.

Get Involved Beyond Running

Don’t feel like running? Volunteer! It’s essential to keep the events running. Roles include timing, scanning barcodes, marshalling, and cheering. It’s a great way to give back and meet new people.

“Volunteering gave me the confidence to join in. I started cheering, then walking, now I run every other week.” — Ayesha, Banbury

Final Tips

  • Check out the Parkrun Oxfordshire map above to find your nearest course, start time, and parking info.
  • Invest in good running shoes and a proper sports bra
  • If you are attending for the first time, arrive ten minutes early as most parkruns have a ‘first timers’ orientation.
  • There is usually official warm-up sessions, and light jogs and stretching is essential
  • Choose your starting position based on pace, don’t crowd the front if it’s not your speed. Run at your pace, so stay at the back if you want to ease yourself in.
  • Most courses have 2 laps, which means the faster runs need to pass the slower runs. Always be aware of this and allow space to be over-taken and don’t run in a wide group if with family and friends
  • Post-run cool down with stretching, hydrate

If you’re not sure where to start your fitness journey, parkrun is one of the easiest, most supportive steps you can take.

Ready to lace up? Oxfordshire’s waiting for you every weekend.

Frequently Asked Questions about Parkrun in Oxfordshire

Do I have to run the whole 5K?

No! You can walk, jog, run, or mix all three. Many people walk the full course, especially when starting out.

How do I join a parkrun?

Register once for free at parkrun.org.uk, print your barcode, and bring it with you to any event.

What time does parkrun start in Oxfordshire?

Most adult parkruns start at 9:00 AM on Saturdays. Junior parkruns start at 9:00 AM on Sundays, but check your local event page.

Can I bring my child or dog?

Yes, children can run with a responsible adult at adult parkrun. Dogs are welcome at many 5K events (check the course page guides on the parkrun site), but not at junior parkruns as they are a trip hazard.

It’s a park and a shared space, but if you are watching with a dog, it’s just common sense to keep them on a short lead to avoid them interfering with the runners.

What should I bring to parkrun?

Just your barcode, comfy trainers, a water bottle, and weather-appropriate clothing. Smiles encouraged!

How much does parkrun cost?

Parkrun is completely free to attend and hopefully the community event always will be thanks to it’s army of regular volunteers.

Where can I find my nearest Oxfordshire parkrun?

Check the full list and map above for the most local to you, but there are 12 across Oxfordshire in Abingdon, Banbury, Bicester, Didcot, Henley-on-Thames, Chipping Norton, Witney, Horspath and Oxford.

What happens after I finish?

You’ll receive your time and place via email or the parkrun app. Many participants stick around for a post-run coffee or chat.
