A book donation campaign has been launched in Oxford to help boost children’s reading in primary schools across Oxfordshire, as new national research suggests many pupils are starting school without basic familiarity with books.
Oxford PR agency Fortitude Communications has partnered with literacy charity Assisted Reading for Children (ARCh) to collect children’s books that volunteers can use in one-to-one reading sessions with pupils aged 3–11.
The campaign was timed to coincide with National Storytelling Week, with organisers pointing to national data showing a long-term decline in reading for pleasure among children and teenagers.
A 2025 survey by the National Literacy Trust found only one in three (32.7%) children and young people aged 8–18 said they enjoyed reading in their free time — the lowest level recorded since the charity began tracking the measure in 2005.
Separately, a Kindred Squared school readiness survey reported that almost a third of children starting Reception were not able to use books correctly, with some parents saying their child tried to “swipe” or “tap” pages like a screen.
How ARCh supports children in Oxfordshire
ARCh works in Oxfordshire primary schools with trained volunteers who provide one-to-one reading support to children who are struggling with literacy, aiming to build confidence and help pupils develop a love of reading.
Elaine Adams, joint founder and CEO of ARCh, said the partnership with Fortitude would help the charity reach more families and inspire lasting engagement with books.
Greig Box Turnbull, founder of Fortitude Communications, said the agency wanted to use its skills and local profile to support a practical community response.
Book donations: what’s needed and when
Fortitude is asking for good-quality paperback books suitable for ages 3–11, including books for early readers and children who need more confidence with reading.
Books will be collected at the agency’s HQ in Cowley, with donations accepted until Friday 13th March. People who want to arrange a drop-off are asked to email info@fortitudecommunications.com.
National Year of Reading 2026
The campaign also aligns with the National Year of Reading 2026, a UK-wide initiative designed to encourage more people to make reading part of everyday life.
