The 14th World Aunt Sally Singles Championship will take place on Saturday 27 June 2026 during the Charlbury Beer Festival at Charlbury Cricket Club, with reigning champion Roger Goodall returning to defend his title. The official championship page says the event runs as part of the wider festival, which takes place from 12pm to 9pm.

Goodall heads into this year’s competition as a four-time world champion, having won in 2015, 2017, 2024 and 2025. The official championship page confirms his latest victory and says he “added to his 2015, 2017 and 2024 victories” when he became 2025 champion.

What is Aunt Sally?

Aunt Sally is a traditional throwing game long associated with Oxfordshire pubs and village competitions. At Charlbury, the championship is run as a singles knockout tournament, with players drawn at random and competing across three legs of six throws. A point only counts if the stick hits the doll before the iron. If scores are level after three legs, players throw three more sticks each, followed by sudden death if needed.

That format makes the competition easy for newcomers to follow, while still drawing some of the best players in the game.

How to enter the 2026 championship

Organisers say players should register in advance through the Charlbury Beer Festival website. On the day, registration opens at 12pm, the draw takes place at 1pm, and the competition starts at 1.30pm. Non-league players must register by 12.30pm and take part in a pre-qualifying session from 12.30pm to 1pm.

The event’s sponsor for 2026 is Bronsens, the Witney-based accountancy firm that has previously supported the festival’s music stage.

Prize money and trophy

The winner will receive £100 in cash and a replica trophy, while the runner-up will receive £50. The champion’s name will also be engraved on the main trophy, the Finings Cup, which is retained by the festival. These prize details were confirmed in the organisers’ announcement.

Part of a much bigger day out

The championship sits within one of west Oxfordshire’s best-known summer fundraising events. The official festival site says Charlbury Beer Festival features around 60 cask ales, 20+ craft beers, ciders, perries, wine, gin and Pimm’s, alongside food, live music, the Culture Club tent and family-friendly activities. The organisers say all profits go to community grants through Charlbury and Overseas Community Projects, a registered charity.

The event is held at Charlbury Cricket Club, directly opposite Charlbury railway station, with the official FAQs recommending train or bus travel. Parking is available at the station car park, but there is no parking on site. The same FAQs also say dogs are not allowed, except for assistance animals.

Ticket prices and entry

Charlbury Beer Festival’s ticket page says all attendees aged 18 and over need a ticket. The site lists online advance prices of £20 for a Beer/Cider ticket and £8 for Entry Only, while the FAQs say on-the-day entry is £10, with beer and cider drinkers needing to buy the festival glass and drink tokens. Under-18s enter free when accompanied by an adult.
