On Thursday July 25th from noon, Market Street in Oxford will come alive with the vibrant and festive Market Street Party, a much-anticipated event organized by Oxford City Council to celebrate the pedestrian-friendly improvements to Market Street

This celebration aims to bring together residents and visitors for a day filled with fun, food, music, and activities, enhancing the community spirit and supporting local businesses.

The area has long been a hub of commercial and social activity in Oxford, and this event continues that tradition by bringing people together in the market.

Event Highlights

Residents will be welcomed by Oxford Lord Mayor, Councillor Mike Rowley, before enjoying a mix of family-friendly activities during the afternoon and live jazz music in the evening.

From midday to 3pm, activities will include:

  • Two 35-minute immersive performances by WhatNot Theatre
  • Dragon arts and crafts with The Story Museum
  • Virtual trip to space with The Space Store
  • Local history and curiosities from the Museum of Oxford
  • Balloon modelling and stilt walking.

During the 5 – 8pm timeslot, residents will be able to relax and enjoy roaming jazz duo Fifi La Mer, regulars at the legendary Upstairs at Ronnie Scotts.

Market Street will be closed to all traffic from 10am – 4pm.

Supporting Local Businesses

The Market Street Party is not just about entertainment; it’s also a significant initiative to support and promote local businesses in central Oxford. By drawing crowds to the area, the event helps boost the local economy and reminds residents of the shops, bars and restaurants waiting for custom.

Sustainable Practices

In line with Oxford City Council’s commitment to sustainability, the Market Street Party will incorporate eco-friendly practices. Efforts will be made to minimize waste, encourage recycling, and use environmentally friendly materials. Attendees are also encouraged to use public transport or cycle to the event to reduce the carbon footprint.

Accessibility

The event is designed to be inclusive and accessible to everyone. There will be provisions for people with disabilities, including accessible pathways and facilities. Organizers aim to ensure that all attendees can participate fully and enjoy the day.

Market Street pedestrian-friendly trial

The Market Street Party will officially launch the trial of pedestrian-friendly improvements to the street which were completed in late spring.

The trial will last 18 months during which time it will be monitored and kept under review. A consultation is currently open on Oxfordshire County Council’s website, and feedback is invited from the public and stakeholders.
