Swimmers enjoying the shallow area and water spray at Hinksey Outdoor Pool in Oxford

One of Oxford’s best-loved summer attractions is set to reopen later this month, with Hinksey Outdoor Pool returning on Saturday 16 May after a major behind-the-scenes upgrade aimed at improving reliability and energy efficiency.

Operators say more than £200,000 has been invested in plant room works ahead of the 2026 season, with the improvements designed to help maintain a more consistent water temperature while reducing downtime and energy use. While much of the work will not be visible to swimmers, the reopening is expected to bring the heated lido back into action after a delayed start to the year.

When does Hinksey Outdoor Pool reopen?

The official Hinksey Outdoor Pool website says the site will reopen on Saturday 16 May 2026, with the 2026 outdoor swimming season running through to Sunday 27 September 2026. The site describes Hinksey as a 35-metre freeform outdoor pool with a beach area for infants and wheelchair access users.

Opening hours published on the pool’s accessibility information page say the site will open from 6.30am to 8pm Monday to Friday and 7.30am to 6pm at weekends.

Why the reopening is happening later this year

The pool’s return comes after an earlier delay to the 2026 season. In March, an Oxford City Council written response to a councillor question said the plant room at Hinksey had flooded during preparations for the new season, damaging electrical systems and mechanical equipment including the pool pumps. At that stage, the council said its leisure contractor was still working to establish a safe reopening timetable.

The new investment programme appears to be the response to that disruption, with operators now saying the plant room work will improve resilience and help cut future interruptions for swimmers.

What swimmers can expect this season

Hinksey remains one of Oxford’s best-known outdoor summer venues, set within Hinksey Park off Abingdon Road. Oxford City Council’s park page says the wider site includes a free splash park in summer, a large play area, table tennis, tennis courts, open grass areas and other leisure facilities, making it a popular family destination as well as a swimming venue.

For swimmers, the 2026 pricing page lists casual entry at £6.40 for adults, £4.10 for juniors and £4.10 for concessions. The same page also lists season passes priced at £210 for adults, £420 for families and £107 for concessions. Heated showers will again be available before and after swims.

A pool with a lower-carbon future

The new work also sits within wider efforts to cut the pool’s environmental impact. Oxford City Council says Hinksey Outdoor Pool was part of a leisure-centre decarbonisation programme that saw a water-source heat pump installed in 2023, using heat from nearby Hinksey Lake. According to the council, that system can provide up to 79% of the pool’s heating needs and is expected to cut the pool’s carbon emissions by 57%.

That means the latest plant room work is not the first major infrastructure investment at the pool, but part of a wider effort to keep the site open, efficient and viable over the long term.

How to get there

The pool is in Hinksey Park, Oxford OX1 4PZ. The official site says parking is very limited and recommends walking, cycling or using public transport where possible. For those coming by bus, it recommends Redbridge Park and Ride and the X2, X3, X15 or X32 services to Lake Street, which is a short walk from the pool. There is also a small pay-and-display car park in Hinksey Park, with free parking for Blue Badge holders.

Oxford City Council also says the park is around a 15-minute walk from the city centre.

In a statement released ahead of the reopening, contract manager Rob Jennings said swimmers would benefit from a more consistent temperature and improved overall experience, even if the investment itself was largely hidden in the plant room. Oxford City Council leader Susan Brown described the pool’s opening as a highlight in the calendar for many Oxford residents and said the latest work would help improve both visitor experience and energy efficiency.
