Todays scorching weather could not be more apt for the official opening of the brand-new Hinksey splash park and balance bike track just in time for the Easter holidays. A free, family-friendly day out in the heart of Oxford just got even better for local families with an exciting way to enjoy the outdoors this spring and summer.

Open daily, the facility combines water play with active fun, and it’s completely free to use.

What to Expect from the New Splash Park

Today, Friday 4 April, local school pupil Felix, aged 5, from St Ebbe’s Primary School, pushed the ceremonial button to activate the jets and fountains for the first time, marking the start of a new era for this beloved Oxford park.

The new play area includes:

  • Interactive water jets and fountains
  • A safe, sustainable design with water optimisation
  • Upgraded features to replace the previous splash area, which had aged over time

Open daily through the summer months (weather dependent)

Free entry for all families

Year-Round Mini-Wheels Track for Toddlers and Preschoolers

Next to the splash park is a ‘learn and play’ mini-wheels track, designed for balance bikes and scooters. It’s open all year round, ideal for colder months when the splash park is closed.

  • Perfect for little learners
  • Encourages confidence on bikes and scooters
  • No booking required

How Was the Project Funded?

The £330,000 redevelopment was made possible thanks to:

  • A £100,000 grant from FCC Communities Foundation
  • Additional investment from Oxford City Council

A Community-Focused Upgrade

“We’re pleased to be able to provide this free leisure facility for families in Oxford. Water play has been part of Hinksey Park since the 1960s, and the new splash park continues that tradition with a modern, sustainable design. The addition of a mini-wheels track means there’s something for children to enjoy all year round. We’re proud to invest in our local community and play areas to support local communities and outdoor play.

Jane Winfield, Director of Property and Assets, Oxford City Council

“We are delighted to have worked with the City Council to fund this project for the local community to enjoy. It’s great to see it now open and available for use, just in time for the Easter School holidays. Thank you to everyone who has worked so hard on this project.”
