A brand-new interpretation of Federico García Lorca’s iconic tragedy Blood Wedding arrives at the Oxford Playhouse this June, staged by University of Oxford student company Full Moon Theatre.

Running from Wednesday June 4th to Saturday June 7th, the production dives into the burning tensions between tradition and desire, and the consequences when the two collide under the Andalusian sun.

Set against the backdrop of rural Spain, a woman prepares to marry a man she does not love. Bound by custom yet haunted by longing, her heart lies with another: a forbidden lover who visits her window in the dark. As passion and duty clash, Lorca’s poetic tragedy unfurls with haunting resonance.

This staging features a live, original Flamenco-inspired score, composed and performed by members of Full Moon Theatre.
On her interpretation of Blood Wedding, director Emma Nihill Alcorta said:

“Written in the summer of 1932 under the shadow of the impending Spanish Civil War, Blood Wedding is a tragedy that cries out to our present, conflict-riven moment. Lorca’s timeless drama asks what it means to love dangerously and deeply, and what it takes for a community to heal from waves of violence that leave gaping holes in the fabric of the self. This is a production for our times, and it has been an absolute joy to develop alongside an extraordinary creative team.”
