The Mayor of Wallingford has officially opened a new play park at Winterbrook Meadows, adding a major outdoor facility for children and families in the growing neighbourhood.

Cllr Nigel Hughes cut the ribbon at the community event, which was attended by residents, families, local representatives and members of the Berkeley team.

The new play area, known as Meadow Keep Play Park, includes a basketball court, a large climbing area, swings, slides and open space.

The facility has been designed to give children of different ages somewhere safe and welcoming to play, be active and spend time outdoors.

New play space for a growing neighbourhood

Winterbrook Meadows is a new neighbourhood on the edge of Wallingford, close to the town centre and the River Thames.

Berkeley describes the development as a sustainable community with landscaped green spaces, play areas and green pedestrian links.

The new play park is part of the developer’s wider community plan for Winterbrook Meadows, which aims to provide shared facilities alongside new homes.

While housing is central to the development, Berkeley said the creation of outdoor spaces and community amenities is also intended to help the neighbourhood become a more connected place to live.

Berkeley says park will support family life

Alan Dearing, Sales Director at Berkeley Homes Oxford & Chiltern, said the new play park was about creating a place where families can meet and children can enjoy being outside.

He said: “Winterbrook Meadows is a growing community, and creating a sustainable place is about much more than bricks and mortar.

“It is about delivering spaces where people can meet, children can play and families can spend time together.

“We are proud to be investing in amenities that will benefit the whole community for the future.

“With such a wide range of facilities, we hope the new play park will be a valuable addition not only for the families at Winterbrook Meadows but also for those across the wider Wallingford area.

“Berkeley is all about creating places that support family life, encourage outdoor activity and strengthen local connections.

“We hope children and families will enjoy this new play park for many years to come.”

The opening follows the recent upgrade and reopening of Winterbrook Lane, which Berkeley says provides easier access between Winterbrook Meadows and Wallingford town centre.

Together, the new play park and improved road connection are intended to help the development feel more connected to the wider town.

For local families, the park adds another outdoor space at a time when new housing areas are increasingly expected to provide community facilities as well as homes.

Why local play spaces matter

Community play areas can play an important role in new neighbourhoods, especially where they are designed to be used by both residents and the wider local area.

They give children somewhere close to home to be active, help families meet neighbours and provide informal spaces where different age groups can spend time together.

At Winterbrook Meadows, Meadow Keep Play Park also sits within a wider landscape-led development, with green routes intended to link homes with the town and surrounding open space.
