Where is the New Theatre in Oxford?

The history of the theatre on Oxford’s George Street spans nearly 188 years, beginning with its establishment in 1836. Subsequently, a second theatre was constructed in 1886, followed by the stewardship of the Dorrill family in 1908. It wasn’t until 1934 that the third iteration, known as the ‘New Theatre,’ was unveiled to the public.

Under the leadership of Stanley Dorrill, the theatre underwent a transformation that culminated in its present-day form. Collaborating with esteemed theatre architects William and T.R. Milburn of Sunderland, a new building was commissioned. Renowned for their work on the art-deco interior, the Milburns worked alongside T.P. Bennett and Sons, who were responsible for the design of the Saville Theatre in London.

In addition to this rich history, the New Theatre in Oxford stands as a testament to architectural and theatrical excellence, showcasing a blend of art-deco aesthetics and modern innovation that continues to captivate audiences to this day.
