George Baldock, former Oxford United footballer and accomplished defender, passed away on 9 October 2024 at the age of 31. His untimely death occurred at his home in Glyfada, Greece, where he had been living since joining Panathinaikos earlier in the year. George was a beloved figure in football, known not only for his dedication and skill on the pitch but also for his kindness and commitment to his community.

Baldock’s football journey began at Milton Keynes Dons, with loan spells at clubs including Northampton, Tamworth, and notably Oxford United. During his time at Oxford, he became a key player in the promotion winning 2015–16 season, earning a place in the PFA League Two Team of the Year for his outstanding performances.

His passion and talent made him a fan favourite at Oxford United, where his link-up and creativity with Alex MacDonald down the right side was joy to watch for U’s fans. He played 47 games in total, scoring 3 goals and registering 4 assists.

George Baldock linked up with former U’s manager Chris Wilder at Sheffield United

In 2017, George signed for Sheffield United, reuniting with former Oxford manager Chris Wilder. His time at Sheffield United saw him play over 200 matches and achieve two promotions to the Premier League, cementing his legacy at the club. George’s humility and leadership were always evident, both in his actions and his rapport with fans and teammates. He was known for his generosity, purchasing a defibrillator for a young fan in need, further endearing him to the football community.

At the Blades, he helped them secure promotion to the Premier League in 2019 and 2023, and gained the nickname Starman, due to the fans singing to the tune of David Bowie’s song to the words “There’s a Star man, running down the wing”.

Nationally, George represented Greece, the country of his grandmother’s heritage, and made his debut in 2022 while at Sheffield United. As a testament to his popularity, his Greek teammates dedicated both goals and the win to him, following their 2-1 shock win over England at Wembley on the 10th October.

In the summer moved to Panathinaikos in Greece where he was living, with his fiancée Annabel Dignam and young son Brody back in Sheffield.

The loss is felt by U’s fans, due to the strong bond with the Baldock family. His brother Sam, a fellow professional footballer ended his playing career at Oxford United before the backroom staff as a business development analyst. Their older brother James was Oxford’s club doctor.

His dedication to his craft was evident throughout his career, whether in League Two or the Premier League, and his presence will be sorely missed by all who knew him. The thoughts and condolences of the football world, especially us here, Oxford United, Sheffield United, and Panathinaikos, are with his loved ones during this difficult time.
