A Brief History of Oxford Pride
Oxford Pride has grown from a small street party into big inclusive celebrations of the LGBTQIA+ community. With roots in Oxford’s rich queer history dating back over 600 years, the event honours diversity through education, entertainment, and advocacy.
The idea for Oxford Pride began in 2002 during a Golden Jubilee street party hosted by two gay pubs on Paradise Street. Its popularity inspired the vision of a local Pride celebration.
Oxford held its first Pride event in Oxpens Meadow on May 3rd 2003, establishing inclusive spaces for community celebration and visibility. The inaugural Oxford Pride parade took place in 2008, marching through iconic parts of the city and LGBTQIA+ venues.
