Celebrating seventy years of theatre-making in the city, Oxford Theatre Guild (OTG) returns to the Oxford Playhouse stage with a brand-new production of George Bernard Shaw’s beloved play, Pygmalion.

Pygmalion, which inspired the celebrated musical My Fair Lady, will take to the stage from Tuesday April 1st to Saturday April 5th.

Set in the bustling streets of early 20th century London, Pygmalion tells the story of Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle who dreams of a better life. Professor Henry Higgins, a brilliant but arrogant linguist bets he can transform Eliza into a ‘duchess’ by teaching her to speak properly. But, as the lessons progress, both teacher and pupil discover that identity and self-worth are far more complex than speech and social status.

The Guild delves into the original themes of the play while bringing Shaw’s work into the 21st century, exploring how society treats women, then and now. Combining wit, humour and social commentary, this production challenges audiences to reflect on the nature of transformation and the true meaning of independence.

Dan Whitley, director of OTG’s Pygmalion, said: “What strikes me about Pygmalion is how relevant it still feels. Eliza’s struggle to define herself, rather than be shaped by others, is a challenge that persists today. In this production, we’ve focused on the play of power dynamics and the lasting impact of transformation.”

OTG is the longest running non-professional theatre company in Oxford and has captivated audiences for over seven decades with productions staged across the city. The Guild has a unique history with Oxford Playhouse, being the longest continuous company to perform at the venue, with an annual production every year, except for 2020 when the theatre closed due to the pandemic.

With over 130 members, The Guild continues to deliver high quality theatre, drawing talent from across Oxfordshire.

Tickets for OTG’s Pygmalion at Oxford Playhouse start from £14 and are available at the Box Office on 01865 305305 or to book online at www.oxfordplayhouse.com
