Oxford Operatic Society returns to the Playhouse stage with a production of the Broadway musical Funny Girl. Oxford Playhouse will host the society from Tuesday July 9th to Saturday July 13th.

Transporting audiences to the Roaring Twenties, Jule Styne and Bob Merrill’s “Funny Girl” follows the journey of Fanny Brice as she dreams of taking on Broadway. Fanny Brice is a young and ambitious woman who wants to become a star, despite friends and neighbors telling her she isn’t pretty enough for the stage. During her rise to stardom, she captures the hearts of audiences and catches the attention of suave entrepreneur Nick Arnstein. As Fanny’s career takes off, her personal life becomes intertwined with the highs and lows of show business and marriage.

Now in its 117th year, OXOPS brings this theater classic to the Oxford Playhouse’s main stage, celebrating the exuberant and elegant flavor of Broadway in the 1910s and 20s. It combines the comic genius of Fanny Brice and features one of the most iconic scores of all time, including songs “Don’t Rain on my Parade,” “I’m the Greatest Star,” and “People.” “Funny Girl” shows a triumphant story of starry success and a bittersweet story of love.

From an original book by Isobel Lennart, and an original story by Miss Lennart, this production is brought to life by the OXOPS team: Ed Blagrove as director, Chris Payne as musical director, and Rachel Garnet Shrader as choreographer.
