If you’ve got teenagers to feed or a group of friends with fussy eaters, finding a restaurant to suit everyone’s tastes and budgets can be a challenge. That’s what makes Cosmo in Magdalen Street, Oxford, such a gem, it really does offer something for everyone.

So when the invitation came in to review it, I jumped at the chance and so did my teen.

A Weekday Treat

We booked a Monday evening slot at 7pm, the perfect way to start the week with a treat. We arrived on time and were seated immediately. Our drinks were ordered, and before they even arrived, my teenage companion had returned from the buffet with a fully loaded plate.

Flavours from Around the World

The best thing about Cosmo is the unmatched variety, it’s a world buffet in every sense.

You’ll find everything from:

  • Traditional British carvery
  • Italian pastas and pizzas
  • Chinese and Japanese favourites
  • Indian curries
  • Korean street food
  • Freshly grilled Teppanyaki dishes

We started at the Chinese counter, sampling:

  • Shredded duck pancakes (a favourite)
  • Lotus dumplings
  • BBQ pork bao buns
  • Korean chicken
  • Chicken in black bean sauce
  • Even more shredded duck!

Then we made our way to the Teppanyaki stand, where we both chose beef and king prawns, which were grilled fresh to order. I added Singapore noodles and mixed vegetables, everything was freshly cooked and full of flavour.

Pace Yourself at the Buffet

Two plates were enough for me, my teenage companion managed four (though admitted at that point the buffet had beaten him!).

With just enough room for dessert, I opted for:

  • Mango mousse
  • Chocolate-filled churros
  • Tiramisu
  • Fresh fruit

Meanwhile, my companion chose waffles and ice cream.

Desserts were aplenty, with so many different options, cakes, cheesecakes, ice creams, chocolate or mango mousse, fruit, and more. The great thing is that they come in very small portions, so no one bats an eyelid if you load up your plate with several.

A Great Group Dining Option

This wasn’t our first visit to Cosmo, and it certainly won’t be our last. It’s easy to navigate the space and refill plates without feeling rushed. Staff were friendly and efficient, quickly clearing used plates and replenishing food so everything remained fresh and hot.

Cosmo is especially ideal for groups or families, not only because of the variety, but also because it gives you the opportunity to try dishes you might not usually order. My only advice? Pace yourself!

A Birthday Surprise

We can’t conclude this review without mentioning the birthday robot, it came out singing “Happy Birthday” while carrying a cake, which it delivered directly to the celebrating guest. What a lovely, fun touch to a celebratory meal!
