This May, one of Oxfordshire’s most cherished cultural events is making its return, Sculpture at Kingham Lodge (Chipping Norton OX7 6YL). Running for its 14th year (2023 excelled with rare art by John Lennon), this extraordinary sculpture show has become a highlight of the regional arts calendar, drawing thousands of visitors from across South and Mid England.

Set within the stunning five-acre gardens of Kingham Lodge, this year’s event promises a diverse and captivating exhibition, featuring over 400 sculptures crafted by more than 50 British sculptors, 60 Zimbabwean artists, and contributions from 30 local schools. Whether you’re a seasoned collector, an art enthusiast, or simply looking for a unique day out, this show offers something for everyone.

An Immersive Artistic Experience

Sculpture at Kingham Lodge isn’t just an exhibition, it’s a carefully curated experience where art meets nature. Visitors can explore sculptures seamlessly integrated into the gardens, set against a backdrop of herbaceous borders, woodland walks, rare trees, ponds, and a wildflower meadow. At the heart of it all is the Moorish Pavilion, a striking architectural feature that serves as a focal point for this breath-taking outdoor gallery.

The collection showcases sculptures in a variety of materials, including:

  • Stone, glass, pottery, steel, and resin
  • Affordable artworks starting from £10 to major statement pieces priced up to £20,000
  • Everything from intricate indoor pieces to large-scale outdoor sculptures

Not all sculptures require a vast garden, many visitors find the perfect windowsill or fireplace piece for their home. Others might fall in love with a stone tortoise, a tin porcupine hidden amongst the foliage, or even a life-sized aeroplane, similar to one installed in a nearby village.

A Visual Feast and a Culinary Delight

Visitors are invited not just to feast their eyes on incredible sculptures but also to indulge in homemade treats. A selection of cakes, scones, and soup will be available, making it the perfect opportunity to relax, unwind, and take in the natural beauty of the gardens over a cup of coffee.

In May, the gardens will be at their most spectacular, with rhododendrons and azaleas in full bloom, offering a rare visual treat not often seen in the Cotswolds.

Supporting Local & International Charities

Beyond the beauty and artistry, Sculpture at Kingham Lodge has a strong philanthropic mission. Proceeds from the exhibition support a range of charities, including:

  • Helen and Douglas House, a local children’s hospice
  • Cotswolds Arts Through Schools, an initiative that brings art, music, dance, and drama into 54 local schools, positively impacting over 8,000 children
  • Various national and international causes dedicated to supporting arts and education

By attending the show or making a purchase, you’re directly contributing to these meaningful initiatives.
