Get ready, Oxford! This September, Hinksey Park is set to become even cooler (or should we say splashier?) with the ground-breaking of a brand new splash park and ‘Little Wheels’ track. Say goodbye to the mundane playground visits and hello to a world of wet and wild fun!
Earlier this year, Oxford City Council snagged a £100,000 grant from the FCC Communities Foundation, lighting the fuse for the project. The total budget? A whopping £330,000! But don’t worry, the council is picking up the tab for the extras.
What’s Splashing?
Want a seasonal splash play area that’s not just for summer? Yes, that’s right! When the mercury drops, the fun doesn’t stop, thanks to the new balance bike and scooter track. Designed for the little tykes to zip and zoom, it’s the city’s only facility tailored for budding bikers and scooter enthusiasts.

Caution: Fun Under Construction!
Ustigate is rolling up their sleeves to dig into this project come mid-September. While the splash zone will be a hard-hat area for a while, the rest of the park remains open to explore. Expect the grand unveiling in Spring 2025, and the best part? It’s absolutely free to use!
Community Voices
Councillor Chewe Munkonge, Cabinet Member for A Healthy Oxford, can barely contain his excitement.
“In these challenging financial times, we are fortunate to be able to continue investing in our local community and facilities. This funding allows us to maintain the seasonal wet play opportunities at Hinksey Park, which has been a beloved tradition for families since the 1960s. Many fondly remember using the old paddling pool and are excited about its replacement splash park.
“The new facility will also include a mini wheels track for younger children, providing a dedicated and safe space for them to learn to ride balance bikes and scooters. It will be the only facility of its kind in the city.”
Cheryl Raynor, Grant Manager, FCC Communities Foundation, is all smiles about the first shovel hitting the dirt.
“We are delighted that work is due to start shortly on site. This is an ambitious and exciting project and the first spade in the ground is a significant milestone. We look forward to seeing the project develop over the coming months.””
So, mark your calendars and ready your swim gears! Hinksey Park is about to get a whole lot splashier. Whether you’re a toddler taking your first ride or just there to make a splash, it’s going to be an epic adventure!
