Acclaimed political drama The Gang of Three comes to Oxford Playhouse from Tuesday 27 to Saturday 31 October 2026.

Following a critically acclaimed, sold-out run at the King’s Head Theatre, Robert Khan and Tom Salinsky’s play offers a chance to revisit a defining moment in the battle for the future of the Labour Party, with themes its writers believe will feel familiar to audiences today.

The original cast returns for the national tour, bringing Roy Jenkins, Denis Healey and Tony Crosland to life in the city where all three studied before becoming influential figures in post-war British politics.

Ambition, ideology and betrayal behind closed doors

Set behind the closed doors of Westminster power, The Gang of Three is a portrait of ambition, ideology and betrayal at the highest level of British politics.

Amid economic crisis and political upheaval, Jenkins, Healey and Crosland fight for the future of the Labour Party and for their own place in history. Their political disagreements become entangled with friendships, rivalries and competing ambitions.

Writers Robert Khan and Tom Salinsky said:

“We wrote this play about the 1970s and 1980s. By the time we finished it, we realised we’d written it about now.

“A Labour government, economic shocks, falling poll ratings and a Cabinet full of ambitious people who can’t agree on anything, with old friends suddenly becoming bitter rivals. Roy Jenkins, Denis Healey and Tony Crosland would feel completely at home.

“But while the politics may feel familiar, the play is really about something timeless: ambition, rivalry, friendship and power. We’re thrilled that audiences across the UK will now get the chance to see it.”

The Oxford connection

Oxford audiences will see the play in a city that forms an important part of its protagonists’ story. Jenkins, Healey and Crosland were contemporaries at Oxford University, where friendships, rivalries and ambitions took shape long before their ministerial careers.

Healey arrived at Balliol College in 1936, followed by Jenkins in 1938. Crosland came to Trinity College in 1937, initially studying classics before returning after wartime service to read philosophy, politics and economics.

Both colleges have highlighted those connections in their own published accounts, giving the Oxford engagement a local significance beyond its place on the touring schedule.

The original cast returns

The three politicians are portrayed by original cast members Alan Cox as Tony Crosland, Hywel Morgan as Roy Jenkins and Colin Tierney as Denis Healey.

Kirsty Patrick Ward directs the production, with set and costume design by Libby Watson, lighting by Jamie Platt and sound by Dominic Brennan.
