For many Oxfordshire residents, London is less than an hour away by train, whether for work, weekends, or special occasions or just a chance to sample the gastronomic experiences the capital is famed for. And while the city can feel a hustling and bustling metropolis at times, some of its most memorable dining experiences are found far above the crowds.

Rooftop restaurants combine excellent food with stunning panoramic views of the famed cityscape, offering a sense of escape without leaving the city. Here’s our pick of the most unforgettable spots to visit, next time you’re travelling in from Oxfordshire and want a meal out to remember.

Seabird (Southwark)

  • The Hoxton, 40 Blackfriars Road, London SE1 8NY
  • Nearest Tube: Southwark
  • Best for: seafood lovers and sunsets

Perched atop The Hoxton hotel in Southwark, the exclusive and trendy Seabird serves Spanish-and-Portuguese-inspired seafood with sweeping views of the Southbank and The Shard. Known for having the longest oyster list in London, its menu celebrates fresh ocean flavours: from grilled octopus to sharing platters of whole fish.

The terrace is lush with greenery (main image), while sunset cocktails here feel like a trip to the Iberian coast.

Expect mains in the £20–£40 range unless you want to try my favourite 350g Wagyu steak at £110 (which I can heartily recommend); booking is essential.

Dining tables surrounded by indoor trees and hanging greenery at 14 Hills
The plant-filled dining room at 14 Hills on Fenchurch Street.

14 Hills (The City)

  • 120 Fenchurch Street, London EC3M 5BA
  • Nearest Tube: Monument
  • Best for: special occasions and skyline views

On the 14th floor of 120 Fenchurch Street, this modern British-French restaurant offers a garden-style dining room with vistas of Tower Bridge, the Thames, and the Tower of London. The botanical interior is as dramatic as the views, and the cuisine top notch.

Dishes showcase seasonal British produce with French flair; Cornish lamb, wild mushroom velouté, and crème brûlée are standouts. It’s refined, romantic, and designed for celebrations.

Mains typically £25–£35. Smart dress encouraged.

Outdoor tables, planted borders and shade canopies on Kioku by Endo’s terrace

Kioku by Endo (Whitehall)

  • The OWO, Whitehall Place, London SW1A 2BD
  • Nearest Tube: Embankment / Charing Cross
  • Best for: Japanese elegance

Probably my favourite Japanese terrace restaurant in London, this is Washoku dining with a contemporary twist. Founded by Michelin-starred sushi master chef Endo Kazutoshi, Kioku blends delicate sushi, ramen bowls, and inventive tasting menus with minimalist interiors and tranquil alfresco rooftop views.

Tasting menus from £95 per person; à la carte available. Private dining and Omakase experiences elevate it beyond a standard night out.

Tables beside lavender planters and potted trees on Orrery’s outdoor terrace
Orrery’s planted terrace in Marylebone.

Orrery (Marylebone)

  • 55 Marylebone High Street, London W1U 5RB
  • Nearest Tube: Baker Street
  • Best for: French classics in a calm setting

Above Marylebone High Street, Orrery’s rooftop garden is dotted with olive trees and lavender, creating a serene atmosphere for refined French dining in London. A long-established gourmet favourite, it serves timeless French dishes: lobster thermidor, confit duck, and airy soufflés, all paired with the best glass of wine.

Expect fine dining prices (£30–£45 mains), but paired with excellent service and wines. Best enjoyed for slower, more indulgent meals.

A wooden table set for diners inside The Culpeper’s rooftop greenhouse
The rooftop greenhouse at The Culpeper in Spitalfields.

The Culpeper (Spitalfields)

  • 40 Commercial Street, London E1 6LP
  • Nearest Tube: Aldgate East / Liverpool Street
  • Best for: relaxed, farm-to-table dining at pub prices

Hidden above a Spitalfields pub, The Culpeper is as down-to-earth as rooftop dining gets. The rustic pub restaurant with a herb and vegetable garden that supplies the kitchen directly, making it one of the few true farm-to-fork rooftops in London.

Dishes change with the seasons but might include lamb grilled with garden herbs, charred courgette, or fig salads. The setting is straight out of Oxfordshire, with weathered wood tables and trailing vines, and it’s also a good bar for a drink and quick bite too.

More affordable than most rooftop venues, mains around £15–£25. Perfect for long summer lunches or laid-back evening suppers.

Practical Tips for Oxfordshire Visitors

  • Getting there: Fast trains from Oxford to London Paddington take under an hour, making day trips easy. From there, the Underground connects to all venues.
  • Budget: Expect prices higher than Oxford restaurants; factor in £60–£100 per head for dinner with drinks at most rooftops.
  • When to book: Rooftops are in high demand, and not just in the summer. Reserve early, especially in summer or for weekends.
  • Weather: Many terraces are covered or heated, but always check. London’s weather is as unpredictable as Oxfordshire’s.

For Oxfordshire residents heading into London, rooftop dining offers a chance to experience the capital from a fresh perspective, quite literally. And with London less than an hour away, the best views, and meals, are closer than you might think.
