In a ground-breaking move toward sustainability, two of the UK’s most iconic visitor attractions, Blenheim Palace and the Eden Project, have teamed up to tackle one of the most pervasive environmental challenges: single-use coffee cups.
Together, they have rolled out an innovative returnable cup system, which is set to eliminate an estimated 620,000 single-use coffee cups annually, saving a staggering 27 tonnes of CO2e per year, the equivalent of heating 12 homes for a full year.
This forward-thinking initiative, powered by green-tech company re-universe, signals a significant leap toward Blenheim Palace’s goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2027 and the Eden Project’s ambition of being climate positive by 2030. This pioneering scheme is attracting considerable attention from industry leaders, including major UK retailers, who are keen to learn from this success.

How It Works
Visitors at both Blenheim Palace and the Eden Project pay a small deposit for a returnable cup when purchasing drinks. After use, the cup is returned via a reverse vending-style machine, and the deposit is refunded instantly through Mastercard Send technology, allowing users to receive funds directly back to their card with a simple tap. The returned cups are then collected, washed, and reused, creating a seamless and hassle-free way to significantly reduce waste.
This state-of-the-art system not only offers a simple solution to single-use waste but also turns sustainability into an effortless part of the visitor experience. By making sustainable behaviour a natural aspect of daily life, Blenheim and Eden are setting a new benchmark for environmental responsibility in tourism.
Leading the Way in Sustainability
The returnable cup system is now fully operational following successful pilots at both sites. David Green, Blenheim Palace’s Head of Innovation, emphasised the importance of this initiative, stating:
“The returnable cup scheme is a major step towards our Net Zero pledge, and it’s hugely gratifying to be working alongside re-universe and Eden Project in leading the way for other UK tourist destinations and retailers.”
“We believe climate change is the single biggest threat to Blenheim’s long-term survival and we’re committed to doing all we can to reduce and mitigate its impacts and help safeguard this World Heritage Site and its resources for future generations.”
At the Eden Project, the scheme is set to save around 220,000 single-use coffee cups annually, eliminating approximately 4 tonnes of waste and delivering a 72% CO2e reduction. Becky Fenner, Hospitality Manager at Eden Project, commented:
“Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do here at the Eden Project and with so many visitors coming through our doors every year, it is crucial we are walking the talk and operating in as sustainable a way as we can.
“As technology improves to match our ambition, we’re delighted to be working with re-universe alongside Blenheim Palace. We are excited to see how the machines both improve the overall visitor experience when returning their cups and help provide us with data and insights to better understand the engagement and impact the scheme is having.”

A Game-Changer for the Tourism Industry
With the help of re-universe, Blenheim Palace and the Eden Project are redefining what it means to run an environmentally responsible attraction. Rachel Warren, CEO of re-universe, praised the two attractions:
“Blenheim Palace and the Eden Project are setting a new standard for sustainability in the tourism industry. Their successful implementation of the returnable cup system, serves as a model for other attractions, businesses and communities aiming to reduce waste and promote environmentally responsible behaviour.”
The returnable cup system is designed to integrate smoothly into the daily operations at both attractions. Its technology not only makes cup returns easy for visitors but also allows both venues to track real-time data, optimising their sustainability efforts and ensuring long-term success in reducing their environmental footprint.
A Blueprint for the Future
As sustainability becomes more critical in the fight against climate change, the partnership between Blenheim Palace and the Eden Project is providing a powerful example of what can be achieved through innovation and collaboration. Their leadership in adopting the returnable cup system is expected to inspire other attractions, retailers, and communities to follow suit in the quest to eradicate single-use waste and promote greener living.
With the combined efforts of Blenheim Palace, the Eden Project, and re-universe, the future of sustainable tourism is looking brighter, and far less wasteful.
