Bluey’s Big Play cast posing on stage with puppets of the Heeler family.

The popular children’s stage production Bluey’s Big Play is coming to New Theatre Oxford this week, bringing the much-loved animated characters to life for a series of performances aimed at younger audiences and families.

The Olivier Award-nominated show runs from Thursday 12 March to Sunday 15 March, with Bluey, Bingo, Mum and Dad returning to the stage following a successful international tour. The Oxford date kicks of a full UK tour over the summer.

Based on the hugely popular (and brilliant) Bluey television series, the live production combines large-scale puppetry, original music and comedy to recreate the world of the Heeler family in a theatrical setting.

A global hit comes to Oxford

Since premiering in Australia, Bluey’s Big Play has toured extensively across the UK, Ireland, Canada, the United States, Europe, Singapore and the UAE, attracting millions of fans.

The stage adaptation features an original story by Bluey creator Joe Brumm, with music by series composer Joff Bush, and includes the original recorded voices of Dave McCormack and Melanie Zanetti, who play Dad and Mum in the television series.

The show is produced by Andrew Kay and Cuffe & Taylor with Windmill Theatre Co for BBC Studios, bringing the animated world of Bluey into a live theatre format.

Meet the stage cast

A rotating cast of performers will bring the characters to life in Oxford.

The role of Bluey is performed by Shakira Alleyne, Shea Ellen Roberts and Laura Wingrove, while Bingo will be played by Shanaye Flanagan, Reanne Hewitt and Tess Oliver.

Dad is portrayed by Adam Ryan, Aarod Vawser and Rhys Wild, with Mum played by Miroe Fuches, Olivia Rainbow and Evie Whybrow. Helena Mitchell joins the production as Off-Stage Swing.

What the show is about

The story centres on a familiar family moment.

When Dad settles down for a quiet afternoon on the bean bag, Bluey and Bingo have other ideas. What follows is a playful battle of imagination, games and clever tricks as the sisters try to persuade Dad to join in the fun.

Packed with music, comedy and colourful puppetry, the show is designed to recreate the warmth and humour of the television series for a live audience.

A favourite with critics and families

The stage production has received strong reviews since its debut.

Broadway World described it as a show where audiences should “expect full chair dancing and shrieks of joy”, while The Guardian praised the production’s puppetry and family appeal.
