Thousands of early risers are expected to gather across Oxford on Thursday 1st May to mark one of the city’s most cherished and time-honoured traditions: May Morning.
This beloved spring celebration, which stretches back over 500 years, will see crowds assembling along the High Street and Magdalen Bridge at dawn to hear the Magdalen College Choir sing from the top of the college’s iconic Great Tower.
Choral Tradition from the Tower
At exactly 6:00am, choristers from Magdalen College School will perform the Hymnus Eucharisticus, a 17th-century composition written by a Fellow of Magdalen College. The ceremony continues with a 20-minute peal of bells from the Great Tower, rung by the Oxford Society of Change Ringers.
Music, Dance and Community Spirit
Once the music fades, Oxford’s streets come alive with Morris dancers, folk musicians, and performances throughout the city centre. Many cafés and pubs will open early to welcome both locals and visitors.
“May Morning is a brilliant and uniquely Oxford experience. The event really brings people of all ages and backgrounds in the city together, with students, families and visitors alike all up early to take part in this much-loved tradition to celebrate the arrival of spring together.
To keep it enjoyable for everyone, we are asking people to follow the instructions from stewards, keep to the pedestrian channels, and use the buggy and wheelchair areas if needed. If you are travelling through the city please be aware of the road closure and alternative routes for both cars and bicycles.”
Paula Redway, Oxford City Council’s Culture and Community Development Manager
