Oxford SmartZone has announced a price freeze on several popular tickets covering bus routes in and around Oxford, ahead of a wider set of fare changes due to come into effect on Sunday 22 February.
SmartZone tickets are valid across services operated by Oxford Bus Company, Stagecoach and Thames Travel, covering Oxford city and surrounding areas including Wheatley, Kennington, Cumnor, Blackbird Leys, Kidlington and Yarnton.
The scheme allows passengers to use the first bus that arrives, regardless of operator, making it a flexible option for people travelling across the city.
Who benefits most from the SmartZone price freeze?
- Daily commuters travelling across Oxford city
- Students and young people mixing operators for quicker journeys
- Families and groups using the group day ticket
- Shift workers and part-time staff relying on weekly travel
- Occasional users who don’t want longer-term passes
Which ticket prices are being frozen?
Oxford SmartZone said the following ticket prices will remain unchanged when bought via operator apps:
- Adult one-day ticket: £5
- Group one-day ticket: £10
- Adult one-week ticket: frozen at current rate
- Under-18 one-week ticket: frozen at current rate
What this means for passengers
For anyone who travels frequently but doesn’t need a long-term pass, the freeze protects some of the most commonly used tickets.
- A passenger buying an adult one-day ticket via an app will continue to pay £5 for a day’s travel within the SmartZone area.
- A group travelling together can continue to use the £10 group day ticket, which may work out cheaper than buying individual day tickets.
Does SmartZone cover my area?
SmartZone covers Oxford city and key surrounding areas including Cowley, Headington, Blackbird Leys, Kidlington and Yarnton, as well as routes reaching Wheatley to the east, Kennington to the south and Cumnor to the west.
Because it works across multiple operators, SmartZone is designed to reduce waiting and make it easier to “hop on” the first suitable bus rather than holding out for one company’s service.
What is changing on 22 February?
Oxford SmartZone confirmed that some other ticket prices will increase, including certain 13-week passes and multi-journey products. Operators said the overall average change across SmartZone tickets is expected to be in line with inflation.
SmartZone also said Any5Day multi-day tickets will be withdrawn, with passengers still able to purchase one-day tickets in any chosen multiples through operator apps.
Important: the price freeze applies only to the selected SmartZone tickets listed above. Other products will change from 22 February.
Operators: “Freezing prices where we can”
In a joint statement, the Oxford SmartZone operators said:
“We are freezing ticket prices where we can and remain committed to delivering a great service at an affordable price for our customers.
“We have worked hard to minimise fare increases, ensuring that bus travel is accessible and convenient for passengers.”
They also highlighted the role of zero-emission buses within the SmartZone network, noting that many routes are now fully electric — which operators say is improving local air quality and supporting greener travel across the city.
What happens next?
The updated ticket prices and product changes come into effect on Sunday 22 February. Customers are advised to check operator websites and apps ahead of the change for full details of updated fare tables and ticket availability.
SmartZone fares: quick questions answered
Does SmartZone include Park & Ride services?
Yes. SmartZone tickets are valid on Park & Ride services operated by participating companies, including routes serving Oxford’s Park & Ride sites. Passengers should check individual operator listings for route-specific details.
Can I still use paper tickets?
Yes. Paper tickets are still available. However, the SmartZone price freeze applies when eligible tickets are purchased via operator apps, so digital tickets may offer better value.
Do I have to stick with one bus company?
No. One of the key benefits of SmartZone is that tickets are valid across Oxford Bus Company, Stagecoach and Thames Travel services within the zone.
Are concessionary passes affected by these changes?
No. Concessionary bus passes continue to operate under existing rules and times and are not affected by the SmartZone price changes.
What happens if I board the wrong bus?
SmartZone tickets are designed to avoid this problem, allowing passengers to take the first suitable bus regardless of operator within the covered area.
