As newbies to Shake Shack we were delighted to be invited to test out it’s new Al Pastor menu.
For any fellow first-timers, Shake Shack is a high street, fast casual burger chain, originally from the US, but now expanding worldwide, including a branch in Cornmarket Street, Oxford, which opened earlier this year.
We arrived at 6pm and were served immediately – we were definitely ahead of the busy period as we initially had the entire first-floor seating area upstairs to ourselves.
On the menu was a side of chicken bites which were tender, melt in the mouth delicious (we kinda wished we’d had another box). This was followed by an Al Pastor Burger
Chilli Cheddar cheeseburger with pineapple, onion and chipotle mayo; an Al Pastor Chicken made with crispy chicken breast topped with pineapple, onion and chipotle mayo.
On first inspection we weren’t sure about pineapple in a burger, but we were pleasantly surprised. For us, the chicken/pineapple combination worked much better. Both mains had a spicy kick!
We also tried Chipotle Cheese Fries – crinkle cut fries topped with chipotle cheese sauce, cherry peppers and spring onions, but we preferred the plain crinkle fries.
For desert we tried the frozen custard sticky toffee pudding – it was tasty, sweet and just enough! Our drinks were pink lemonade and Chilli Mango Shake – both delicious.
We found the restaurant was clean, plenty of staff on hand and the condiments section was fully stocked. But we were particularly impressed with the straws. Yes, they were paper and yes, they were recyclable, but oh my goodness, they did not disintegrate as you drank through them (which can be a particular problem with milkshakes)!
We were very impressed – it’s the little things that make an experience great! We will definitely return.
