The Rocky Horror Show returned to Oxford’s New Theatre last night, and it hasn’t lost any of its magic.
From the first bar to the final note, the cast and the audience were completely swept up in the energy. Proof? A full standing ovation at the curtain call.
Audience participation is a huge part of the fun, think of it as pantomime for grown-ups. From the opening moments, the crowd was shouting witty one-liners, dancing in the aisles, and gleefully heckling Brad and Janet. It’s clear that for many, this show is as much about the audience as the performers.
The Band and the Hits
The band wasted no time getting the party started: barely had the first notes of “Time Warp” sounded before the audience was on its feet. Classic hits like “Sweet Transvestite,” “Science Fiction/Double Feature,” and “Dammit Janet” kept the atmosphere electric all evening.
Standout Performances
The loudest cheers of the night went to Frank’N’Furter, played by the outrageously brilliant Adam Strong (with a long list of theatre credits to his name). Watch out for the bed scene, it’s hilariously unforgettable!
Jackie Clune stole every scene as the Narrator, lacing the story with laugh-out-loud jokes about Donald Trump and Elon Musk. A stand-up comedian by background, Clune’s quick wit kept everyone grinning.
Lauren Chia and Connor Carson charmed as the innocent Janet and Brad, while Morgan Jackson’s muscular Rocky kept many eyes glued to the stage.
The costumes were dazzling; corsets, sequins, and fishnets galore, and the colourful, ever-changing set added to the show’s over-the-top appeal.
Is It for Everyone?
A word of warning for the uninitiated: this show is risqué, raunchy, and proudly outrageous. That’s exactly why audiences love it! But if you’re easily shocked, you might want to prepare yourself!
