Santa needs a little Oxfordshire help this year, his reindeer have gone exploring! Families are invited to join a festive steam-powered adventure across Didcot Railway Centre’s 21-acre living museum, tracking down the missing reindeer and wrapping up the day with a visit to the big man himself.

What’s included

  • Reindeer Trail: Children receive a passport and Christmas stocking on arrival. Find the reindeer stations hidden around the site and collect a small gift at each stop.
  • Santa’s Toy Workshop: Finish your mission by meeting Santa and choosing your own present from his workshop.
  • Unlimited steam train rides: Your ticket includes unlimited trips on the main demonstration line all day.
  • Explore the museum: Step inside the original 1932 GWR Engine Shed, see beautifully restored locomotives and (on selected engines) climb onto the footplate.
  • Festive refreshments: The on-site café serves seasonal treats to keep little elves fuelled.

Getting there & accessibility

Entrance & access

  • Entry is through the ticket hall at Didcot Parkway mainline station.
  • Tell the GWR barrier staff you’re visiting Didcot Railway Centre and they’ll open the barriers (you may be asked to show your Railway Centre e-tickets when you exit).
  • A new access ramp from the subway is now open to all visitors (some heritage vehicles remain limited-access while work progresses).
  • From the platforms, follow signs to the Railway Centre, turn right in the subway, and look for the double doors to the entrance.

By train

  • Direct Great Western Railway services from London Paddington, Reading, Oxford, Swindon, Bath, Bristol and South Wales.
  • National Rail Enquiries: 03457 484950.

By bus

  • Thames Travel runs daily services from Oxford, Abingdon and Wallingford that stop outside Didcot Parkway.
  • Wider public transport planning: Traveline.

By car & parking (cashless)

  • The Centre doesn’t operate its own car parks. All nearby parking is cashless:
    • APCOA multi-storey (Basil Hill Road) – card machines available; about 10–15 minutes’ walk to the Centre via the covered walkway from Level 2 to the station frontage.
      • What3Words for the car-park access road: ///caves.wades.slanting
    • Two surface car parks opposite the station (either side of the pub) – postcode OX11 7NR – much closer to the entrance.
  • Tip: Don’t use the generic “Didcot Railway Centre” sat-nav address – it can route you into a housing estate the other side of the tracks.
  • Operators: RingGo (app required) and APCOA (card machines in the multi-storey).

Blue Badge & step-free

  • Blue Badge spaces near the station entrance.
  • For step-free planning see the Railway Centre’s Detailed Access Guide and call 01235 817200 for individual advice.

Where is Didcot?

  • Approximately 53 miles west of London, 10 miles south of Oxford, and midway between London and Bristol on Brunel’s original Great Western Railway.

Make tracks to Didcot and Steam into Christmas, a merry mix of railway magic and Santa sparkle for all the family.
