The death of a 15-year-old believed to be a Wantage schoolboy is being treated as unexplained but not suspicious, police confirmed today.
The teenager, who has not been named by police, is thought to have been a pupil at King Alfred’s Academy.
He died after a Thames Valley Air Ambulance helicopter landed at the school in Springfield Road shortly before 2pm on Friday.
The emergency was termed a ‘fear for the welfare’ incident by Thames Valley Police, who confirmed they were called to a residential address close to the school.
Thames Valley Police spokesman Anne Tugwell said: “It was a 15-year-old boy that died. It was an unexplained death.
“It is not being treated as suspicious.”
She added police would not be releasing any more details of the incident as it was not a criminal matter.
The air ambulance landed in fields by the school but the boy was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital on Oxford by road ambulance.
Ms Tugwell said on Friday: “It was fear for the welfare of a teenage boy who’s been taken to hospital.”
King Alfred’s Academy was closed on Friday for a teacher training inset day and is shut this week for half term.
Wantage’s Sweatbox youth club, based at the Springfield Road site, cancelled their Zombie Night which was due to take place on Friday evening due to ‘unforeseen circumstances’.
A spokesperson for South Central Ambulance Service said on Friday: “The air ambulance landed in the King Alfred’s Academy east site grounds after being called at 1.23pm.
“It’s a medical emergency but the incident is not at the school.
“The patient was taken to John Radcliffe Hospital by land ambulance joined by crew from the air ambulance.”
