A Festival With Roots: The Story of Truck Festival
Truck Festival isn’t just another summer festival, it’s a legendary part of the UK’s independent music scene. Founded in 1998 by the Bennett family, including Robin and Joe Bennett of the band Goldrush, Truck was born from a desire to rebel against the commercialization of mainstream festivals like Glastonbury.
What started in 1998 as a humble birthday party that “got out of control” has evolved into one of the UK’s most beloved independent festivals slash UK’s most warped village fête.
Despite common belief, Truck Festival wasn’t named after flatbed trucks used for its original stage setup. Instead, it got its name from a compilation CD Robin Bennett found, “Ten Trucking Greats,” the soundtrack of the movie Convoy.
Held annually at Hill Farm in Steventon, Oxfordshire, Truck has hosted some of the biggest names in indie, rock, and alternative music over the years, including Foals, The Libertines, Royal Blood, Kasabian, The Wombats, and IDLES. Yet, it’s still known for its tight-knit community, quirky traditions, and independent spirit.
Truck has hosted everything from secret sets by Mystery Jets and Frank Turner to unforgettable headline moments with Two Door Cinema Club, Royal Blood, and Jamie T. It has even seen the Oxford Symphony Orchestra turn the main stage into a classical mosh pit!
Unlike many corporate festivals, Truck is all about supporting local communities, with food stalls run by the local Rotary Club and even ice cream served by the village vicar! Plus, all profits go to charity, making it a festival with real heart.
One of the most unique features? The “Barn That Cannot Be Named” which is a real cow shed transformed into a thrashing haven for metal, punk, and hardcore acts by day and a drum & bass club by night. Even with the faint smell of manure, it remains one of the most iconic places to catch a set at Truck!
With a capacity of around 30,000, Truck Festival is the perfect “microcosm” of bigger UK festivals like Glastonbury or Reading & Leeds, but with a more manageable scale and a friendlier atmosphere. No wonder it’s been called “The Godfather of Small Festivals.”.
With a reputation for blending emerging talent with iconic names, Truck Festival continues to deliver an unbeatable mix of indie, rock, and alternative music in the heart of Oxfordshire.
