The Scouts continue to grow from strength to strength in Oxfordshire, and despite opening only a few months back in November 2023.
Meeting in Shipton-Under-Wychwood on term time Thursday evenings (6.30 – 8.30pm), Wychwood Explorers are giving young people the opportunity to develop Skills for Life with new adventures and empowering challenges.
Led by inspirational volunteers, Wychwood Explorers (boys & girls aged 14-17) opened in November 2023 and immediately got started with the over 200 activities that Scouts has to offer.
Skiing, Ice Skating, a Night Hike, & a cooking competition, are just some of the exciting challenges they have achieved in the past few months.
Creating an accessible group for young people to fulfil their Scouting journey was very important to Explorer Leader Jonathan, who says that this age is the “most important time to be in scouting”. With the group, young people have had the opportunity to develop their team working skills, project management skills and leadership skills. All essential Skills for Life that transfer to future education prospects and employment opportunities.
Moving into the Summer, the Explorers will be taking their skills to the country’s largest Monopoly themed event for Scouts and Guides, the London Monopoly Run. Projects with local employers & communities are also on the horizon, along with an adventurous expedition & a Lake District Camp.
With Wychwood Explorers, the young people took part in their own ‘Dragon’s den’ evening. They created their own micro-businesses that they took out in the local community to fundraise for a trip of their choosing. The Explorers exceeded their goals and not only raised the money to go indoor skiing, but also to enable an ice skating trip for them all.
The Scouts encourage Explorers to “Try more. See more. Do more. At Explorers you’ll get the chance to dream big, find your place in the world and make memories to last a lifetime.”
