The Tony and Grammy Award-winning musical Hadestown will come to Oxford’s New Theatre from Tuesday 19 to Saturday 23 October 2027 as part of its first UK and Ireland tour.
Written by singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and developed with director Rachel Chavkin, the show brings together two Greek myths in a journey to the underworld, with a score drawing on folk, blues, pop and New Orleans-inspired jazz.
The George Street run includes evening performances and three matinees, giving Oxfordshire audiences the opportunity to see the musical locally. Casting for the tour and the full creative team are still to be announced.

What is Hadestown about?
Hadestown intertwines the love story of Orpheus and Eurydice with that of Hades, king of the underworld, and his wife Persephone.
The musical explores love, faith, doubt and the struggle to hold on to hope. Rather than approaching the myths as a conventional period drama, it tells them through a blend of American songwriting traditions, moving between folk, blues, pop and jazz.
Mitchell describes it as a sung-through musical, with the narrative carried through song. Its musical identity grew out of her work as a singer-songwriter, years before the production reached Broadway.
Speaking in the tour announcement, Mitchell said the team was “thrilled to bring this story and music to folks all over and see what new resonances will be found”.
From a community production to Broadway and the West End
Mitchell wrote the music, lyrics and book for Hadestown. It began as a community theatre project in Vermont in 2006–07, with local performers and artists, before becoming a studio album in 2010.
She subsequently worked with Chavkin and other collaborators to expand it into a full-length professional production. Its development included performances at New York Theatre Workshop in 2016 and London’s National Theatre in 2018, before its Broadway opening in April 2019.
On Broadway, Hadestown won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Direction of a Musical. Its original Broadway cast recording then won the Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album in 2020.
The West End production opened at the Lyric Theatre in February 2024 and continues to play there. The forthcoming tour takes the musical to audiences beyond its London home.

Who will be in the Hadestown tour cast?
The touring cast has not yet been announced. Names associated with the Broadway or West End productions should not be taken as confirmation of who will perform in Oxford.
The full touring creative team is also still to be confirmed. The UK and Ireland tour is produced by Mara Isaacs, Dale Franzen, Hunter Arnold and Tom Kirdahy.
Future casting announcements will be published through the official Hadestown tour website.
