Milton Post Office has officially opened at Signal Yard, marking a new chapter for one of Milton Park’s longest-standing independent businesses.

The family-run branch first opened at Milton Park in July 2004, after the closure of the village High Street Post Office. Since then, it has become part of everyday life for workers, residents, visitors and businesses across the Park and surrounding villages.

Originally established at Milton Park by Abdul Rehman Bajwa, the branch is now run day to day by his son Zaeem, who has worked at the Post Office for the past 16 years.

The move from 11 Park House to Signal Yard gives the business a larger, more modern space and places it at the heart of Milton Park’s new social and retail destination.

A trusted service for businesses and residents

The Post Office has long served both the Park’s science and technology companies and the wider community.

For businesses, it has handled mail, parcels and everyday postal needs. For residents and visitors, it has offered services including posting parcels, returning online orders, buying cards, sending birthday presents and collecting travel money.

For many customers, the branch has become more than a service counter. Milton Park says generations of customers know Abdul and Zaeem by name, with some continuing to use the branch even when they live closer to other Post Offices.

Abdul, who ran the branch full time between 2004 and 2010 before handing the business over to his son, said customer loyalty had been central to its success.

He said: “Over the years, we’ve seen Milton Park change enormously, but what has always stayed the same is the people.

“Customers have supported us for decades and many still come back now, even if they live in other villages or have another Post Office closer to them. That makes us very proud.”

From a compact unit to a larger home

The original branch operated from a compact unit at 11 Park House for more than 20 years.

During that time, it became especially valued during the Covid-19 pandemic, remaining open as an essential service while many other facilities were closed.

The new Signal Yard premises provide more room for customers, more privacy and space to expand the shop offer, including a wider range of stationery, greeting cards and, in future, convenience items.

Zaeem said the relocation felt like the start of a new chapter.

He said: “The old unit served us incredibly well for many years, but we’d reached the point where we needed more space, especially during busy periods like Christmas when queues would often stretch outside.

“Now, customers have more room, more privacy and a much better overall experience. It’s a huge step forward for us.”

Part of Signal Yard’s growth

The Post Office relocation forms part of the wider development of Signal Yard, Milton Park’s new social and retail destination.

Signal Yard has been designed to bring together independent food, drink, health, wellbeing, retail and everyday services for people working at Milton Park, local residents and visitors.

The development includes four repurposed buildings, 17 retail units across two floors, landscaped outdoor space and an events area.

Businesses now open at Signal Yard include Bros Barbers, Damira Dental Studios, Flex Health Club and Milton Post Office. Milton Park’s latest updates also list Apollo Pharmacy and vegan restaurant Planted Plates as open, with 1885 Burgers, Chor Muang Thai and Tap Social’s Day Release due to follow.

Clare Fleet, asset manager of Milton Park at Federated Hermes Real Estate, said: “Milton Post Office has been part of the fabric of Milton Park for more than 20 years and is a fantastic example of the independent businesses and people that help create a genuine sense of community here.

“Abdul and Zaeem have built something incredibly special through their commitment to customer service, trust and consistency over many years.

“We’re delighted that Signal Yard can now provide them with a new long-term home that reflects both the importance of the service they provide and the role they play within the wider Milton Park community.”

Why the move matters locally

Milton Park is one of southern Oxfordshire’s major employment locations, home to more than 280 organisations across science, technology, business and research.

That means everyday services such as a Post Office, pharmacy, food outlets and health facilities play a practical role in how the site functions.

For occupiers, the branch supports business mail, parcels and other routine services without needing to leave the Park. For nearby residents, it preserves access to a local Post Office in an area where many village services have changed over time.

The move also shows how Signal Yard is being positioned as more than a food and drink development. By bringing together the Post Office, pharmacy, dental practice, fitness, barbers and independent hospitality, Milton Park is trying to create a central hub for both working life and community use.
