The Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum in Woodstock is set to host a remarkable new exhibition celebrating the life and work of E. H. Shepard, the beloved illustrator behind Winnie-the-Pooh and The Wind in the Willows.

The exhibition, running from today, 18th January to 31st August 2025, brings together an extraordinary collection of Shepard’s artwork and memorabilia, marking the first time such a comprehensive display has been showcased in Oxfordshire.

A Journey Through Shepard’s Iconic Art

The exhibition in the The Cloister Gallery (Ground Floor) offers an in-depth look at Shepard’s career, featuring his enchanting children’s book illustrations alongside sketches and paintings created during his service in the First World War. Highlights include original Winnie-the-Pooh illustrations, Great War cartoons, and political cartoons spanning the 20th century.

Among the artefacts on display are Shepard’s personal items from his time as an officer in the Royal Garrison Artillery, including his forage cap and identification tags, providing visitors with a poignant glimpse into his wartime experiences.

A Versatile Talent Beyond the Bear

Shepard’s artistic reach extended far beyond Winnie-the-Pooh. The exhibition showcases his political cartoons for Punch magazine, where he addressed significant historical events, including the rise of Hitler, the Second World War, and the sweeping social changes of post-war Britain. Original sketches from lesser-known works, such as Betsy and Joe and The Secret Garden, further illustrate his incredible versatility.

Family-Friendly Activities and Events

To complement the exhibition, the museum has planned a wide range of family activities:

  • ‘Up in the Air’ Visitor Trail: Children can embark on a fun-filled scavenger hunt to help the residents of Hundred Acre Wood find their lost belongings.
  • Winnie-the-Pooh-Themed Play Area: Younger visitors can enjoy a specially designed play area featuring characters from the Hundred Acre Wood.
  • Craft Workshops and Tea Parties: From kite-making to puppet-making, regular craft sessions will keep children entertained during the school holidays.

Talks and Events for Adults

For art and history enthusiasts, James Campbell, Chairman of The Shepard Trust and author of Shepard’s War and The Art of Winnie-the-Pooh, will deliver engaging talks about Shepard’s life and legacy. Dates for these talks will be announced on the museum’s website soon.
