Children holding Christmas stockings beside a model reindeer and a uniformed volunteer at Didcot Railway Centre

Families can combine a visit to Father Christmas with steam-train rides when Didcot Railway Centre’s festive event returns on eight dates this December.

Steam Into Christmas takes visitors around the heritage railway site on a seasonal trail, with small gifts to collect before meeting Santa and choosing a present. Unlimited rides on the main demonstration line are included.

What is included?

Children receive a reindeer passport and stocking for the festive trail, collecting small gifts along the way. The visit ends with Santa’s grotto, where they can choose a present.

The railway’s historic setting is part of the day out. Alongside the train rides, visitors can explore the 1932 engine shed and look at locomotives, with access to selected footplates. The centre recommends allowing two to three hours for the experience.

Much of the visit takes place outdoors, so warm layers and suitable footwear will be useful even though there are buildings to explore. An arrival slot is required when booking.

Tickets and family costs

The booking system lists standard adult admission at £20 and children’s tickets at £26.50 across its age bands from one upwards. That makes £93 for two adults and two children aged one or over, before any optional Gift Aid donation.

Under-ones and eligible carers have free ticket options. Select the appropriate categories when booking and check the carer requirements on the booking page. Complimentary tickets are not valid for this special event.

How to reach the railway centre

The entrance is through Didcot Parkway station. Tell staff at the ticket barriers that you are visiting the railway centre, then follow the signs through the subway to its entrance. Direct trains connect Didcot with Oxford, Reading and other stations on the Great Western network.

For drivers, the visitor postcode is OX11 7NR. The centre has no on-site car park, so parking is an additional cost. Foxhall’s multi-storey station car park is around ten minutes’ walk from the entrance via its covered walkway; other car parks are closer to the station.

Blue Badge spaces are available near the station entrance. Visitors with limited mobility should consult the centre’s directions and linked detailed access guide before choosing a parking place and route.
